3 Soldiers wounded in Mindoro

From the Manila Bulletin (Apr 27): 3 Soldiers wounded in Mindoro

Government forces clashed with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels the other day in Barangay Batasan, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, resulting in the wounding of three army soldiers.

Colonel Generoso Bolina, Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) spokesman, confirmed yesterday the wounding of Privates First Class (PFCs) Medillo Sgamayao, Ariel Juagpao, and PFC Aldrin Jamiro, all members of Army’s 76th Infantry Battalion.

Bolina said the encounter happened Thursday afternoon as a squad of Bravo Company of the 76th IB responded to an alarm that NPA guerrillas were in the village of Batasan, extorting money from residents.

As the squad led by 2nd Lieutenant Valmonte drew nearer to the area, the soldiers were met by gunfire.

Lt. Col. Ed Peralta, commanding officer of the 76th IB, said a number of the rebels were wounded as soldiers returned fire.

The escape trail of the rebels who withdrew deep into the forest had blood stains, said Peralta.

Maj. Gen. Cesar Ronnie Ordoyo ordered a hot pursuit operation to ensure that none of these rebels disrupt the campaign season and upcoming elections.
