US Navy, groups join Cebu City village cleanup drive

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 25): US Navy, groups join Cebu City village cleanup drive

Over 20 members of the United States Naval Forces based in Guam visited Cebu City and helped clean the coastal areas in Barangay Basak Pardo, this city, Sunday morning.

The US Navy personnel, who are onboard USS Frank Cable headed by chaplain Lt. Cmdr. John Miyahara, helped the City Government and barangay officials in cleaning the coastal areas in Sitios Tayod and Kanipaan in Basak Pardo, said Basak Pardo Barangay Captain David Tumulak.

Aside from the coastal areas, Tumulak said the US Navy, together with more than 100 employees from City Hall, also de-clogged the waterways in the area.

The group, he said, collected tons of garbage, which had caused floods during heavy rains.

Tumulak said he did not know how the US Navy learned about their clean-up drive.

The USS Frank Cable is in Cebu for a three-day goodwill visit. It is presently docked in a wharf in Talisay City.

The USS Frank Cable is scheduled to depart for Guam on Tuesday.
