Army, LGU sign pact for an NPA-free town in Davao del Sur

From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 20): Army, LGU sign pact for an NPA-free town in Davao del Sur

The Philippine Army (PA) and the local government unit of Sta. Cruz town in Davao del Sur signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) Wednesday morning to stamp down the insurgency problem in the area.

Lt. Col. Norman Zuniega, commander of the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion based in sitio Cogon, Barangay Tuban, Sta. Cruz, and Mayor Joel Ray Lopez, being the chair of the Municipal Peace and Order Council, led the signing held at the Municipal Training Center.

Zuniega and Lopez both committed to prevent the resurgence of insurgent influence in the municipality so as the military and the LGU can continue to provide socio-economic development and progress to communities in remote areas.

Zuniega said as part of their strategies they are launching the Internal Security Effort (ISE) as a tool to harmonize the intensified fight against communist rebels while implementing livelihood projects to the residents.

Meanwhile, in Davao Oriental, two battalion commanders claimed that the insurgency problem in the province is already reportedly a thing of the past.

Lt. Col. Krishnamurti Mortela of the 67th IB and Lt. Col. Francisco Lorenzo Jr. of the 28th IB were one in saying that their areas of responsibility were already cleared of the presence of the New People’s Army.

“We are now on our peace and development efforts with the people in Davao Oriental,” said Mortela, whose AOR (area of responsibility) covers the second district of Davao Oriental. Lorenzo’s battalion is assigned at the first district.
