Philippine Army 301st Brigade Commander Arnold Quiapo has confirmed that an encounter with the elements of the New People’s Army (NPA) took place around 7:15 a.m. on Monday in the Interior Brgy. Bad-as of San Joaquin, Iloilo.

Col. Quiapo said that a platoon of government soldiers were conducting security patrol in the interior barangay in San Joaquin in the first district of Iloilo province when they were ambushed by the NPA fighters.

Firefight lasted about 20 minutes until the NPA withdrew. He said no one from the government side was injured but confirmed several were wounded among the rebel group numbering to 15 to 20.

The platoon of army composed of 30 soldiers has recovered a laptop and some personal belongings of the NPAs. The encounter is the first to happen in Panay island this year.

The NPA southern front is led by Roberto Gomiya and operating near the area covered by the Revolutionary Proletarian Army (RPA) in San Joaquin. Col. Quiapo said that the NPA is making their presence felt in the barangay now that it is election time. The army is now in hot pursuit of the NPAs.
