Alleged New People's Army (NPA) rebels ambushed government troops in Albuera, Leyte Friday afternoon, leaving one soldier killed and two others wounded. Captain Dranreb Canto, spokesman of the Philippine Army's 802nd Infantry Brigade based in Ormoc City, said members of the 78th Infantry Battalion were on their way back from "peace and development activities" in the interior sitios of Albuera when they were ambushed by around 10 rebels in Sitio Calingatnan, Barangay San Pedro, 4 p.m. Friday, Bonifacio Day. Of the 16 soldiers on board the military vehicle, Private First Class Richard Abines was killed while Private First Class Jay Baysa Pinabacdao and Pfc Frederic Mar were wounded. Colonel Valencia, Brigade Commander, has directed pursuit against the rebels and vowed to continue with the peace and development efforts in the area.
