Four men will face inquest proceedings Sunday afternoon for allegedly stabbing to death the spouse of an employee of the United States embassy in Makati City's posh Bel-Air Village last Saturday. Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona, Southern Police District (SPD) director, did not publicly release the names of the four suspects but said they will be brought to the Makati City Prosecutor's Office at 1 p.m. today. At the arraignment, the suspects were identified as Crispin dela Paz, 28, a businessman; Juan Alfonso, 24, a businessman; Galicano Datu III, 22, a student; and Osric Cabrera, 27, a businessman. According to a report from Makati police, American George Anikow (not Anico as earlier reported), 41, a resident of Bel-Air, was being checked by the village security guard at the Kalayaan Avenue gate as he was entering the village on foot at around 4:20 a.m. Saturday. This was reportedly the village policy for those entering the area in the early hours. As he was being checked, the four suspects, who were on board a Volvo SUV, were also stopped by the guards at the gate as part of security measures. Anikow then reportedly approached the SUV and told the four: "You need to present your ID, the guard is checking you." When the four ignored him, he tapped on the car window which reportedly angered the four, leading to an argument. The four suspects mauled and stabbed the victim and attempted to escape but were arrested by responding policemen. Police also recovered the knife used in the stabbing. The victim died while undergoing treatment at the Makati Medical Center. US embassy press attache Tina Malone confirmed the incident but refused to give out the name of the victim for "privacy reasons." Various news reports spelled the victim's name differently. "We understand that the Philippine National Police have suspects in custody. The US embassy appreciates the cooperation of the Philippine authorities and will work closely with the PNP in their investigation," she said.
