MANILA – Senator Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada on Wednesday called on the Senate to look into the ambush of four Army soldiers in Maguindanao del Sur to assess the peace and security situation in the area.

“Despite immense government resources being put into comprehensive peace efforts and addressing the root causes of insurgency and violent extremism over the years through a whole-of-nation approach, the scourge threatening security and stability in the area remains,” Estrada said in a statement.

He said he filed Senate Resolution No. 984 asking the Senate leadership to direct the appropriate committee to exercise the upper chamber’s oversight functions in ensuring that “necessary measures” are in place to make the country safe and secure.

“In light of the threat of continued attacks, the public must be assured that the military establishment and law enforcement authorities are on top of the situation. Preserving and promoting lasting peace are paramount interests of the State as it aims to attain inclusive development and sustainable economic growth,” he said.

The four soldiers, who were in civilian clothes, were buying food for the "Iftar" of the Muslim community near their camp when they were ambushed by suspected Dawlah Islamiya (DI) terrorists in Datu Hoffer Ampatuan town, Maguindanao del Sur on March 17.

"Iftar" is the breaking of the fast of Muslims after sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.

Estrada said the incident highlights the fragility of peace in the area during a significant religious occasion.
