CHRISTENING AND COMMISSIONING CEREMONY: The Philippine Navy held a Christening and Commissioning Ceremony for BRP Valentin Diaz (PS-177) and BRP Ladislao Diwa (PS-178) on September 11 at the Philippine Navy's Naval Station Jose Andrada in Manila. The ceremony was attended by Secretary of National Defense Gilbert 'Gibo' Teodoro, Jr.; US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson; Deputy Chief of Staff AFP LtGen Charlton Sean Gaerlan; and PN Flag Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Toribio Adaci Jr.

These two patrol vessels were donated by the United States through the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program. The US Navy transferred the former Cyclone-class patrol vessels to the Philippine Navy after they were decommissioned in Bahrain on March 28 and were delivered to the country last May. They will join BRP General Mariano Alvarez (PS-38), which was turned over to the PN in 2004. (Photos by A2C Castro/PAO, AFP)
