MANILA – The Department of National Defense (DND) on Thursday expressed its condolences to the family and friends of former Philippine Air Force (PAF) chief Maj. Gen. Ramon Farolan who passed away Wednesday at the age of 88.

"The DND is deeply saddened by the passing of Maj. Gen. Ramon J. Farolan AFP, former Commanding General of the Philippine Air Force. Gen. Farolan was a seasoned diplomat, dedicated public servant and a respected columnist," Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said in a statement.

Farolan is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1956 and graduated from the PAF Flying School in 1957.

Andolong said Farolon served with unwavering dedication and commitment throughout his career, making significant contributions to the country's national defense, displaying exemplary leadership and professionalism in every role.

"His leadership skills and strategic thinking played a pivotal role in enhancing the effectiveness and readiness of the PAF and the Armed Forces (of the Philippines)," he added.

The former PAF chief is an esteemed pilot and commander, having received awards and commendations not only from the Armed Forces, but from all over the world.

"Beyond his professional accomplishments, Maj. Gen. Farolan was known for his compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of service members under his command. He fostered a culture of camaraderie and unity, inspiring those around him to excel and uphold the highest standards of military service," Andolong said.

Farolan was born in Baguio City on August 31, 1934 and was the 16th PAF commanding general serving from Feb. 25 to Oct. 8, 1986.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with MGen Farolan's family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. The Department of Defense stands ready to provide support and assistance to them as they navigate this period of mourning," Andolong said.

Farolan also served as the country's envoy to Indonesia, customs commissioner and administrator of the Export Processing Zone Authority of the Department of Trade and Industry.

He was also a columnist of the Philippine Star and a former president and editor in chief of the paper.

"As we mourn the loss of Maj. Gen. Farolan, the One Defense Team reaffirms our commitment to honor his memory by carrying forward his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering spirit," Andolong said.
