A young member of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Samar surrendered to policemen in Biliran province as a result of intensified intelligence network and counter-insurgency drive, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Wednesday.

Police
identified the surrenderer as "Ka Anna Lou", 24, of Guirang village in Basey, Samar. He was a regular member of the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) under a platoon operating in the upland areas near the border of Samar and Eastern Samar.

He was recently designated as an intelligence monitoring officer.

The NPA member voluntarily turned over a caliber .38 revolver when he surrendered to operatives of police mobile force company (PMFC) in Biliran, Biliran on Tuesday.

“He was with the NPA for nearly three years. He voluntarily surrendered to the government and decided to lay down his arm and return to the folds of law out of dissatisfaction on the unfulfilled promises of the communist group,” Col. Joel Serrano, PNP Biliran provincial director, said in a statement.

The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

The Anti-Terrorism Council also formally designated the NDF as a terrorist organization on June 23, 2021, citing it as “an integral and inseparable part” of the CPP-NPA that was created in April 1973.
