Carmen, Surigao del Sur – The 36 Infantry (Valor) Battalion finally identified the victim of NPA summary execution in the hinterlands of Sitio Avelino, Barangay Cabangahan, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur. The exhumed skeletal remains were identified as Manuel Maayo, 30 years old, single, farmer and a resident at Sitio Katarugan, Barangay Lobo, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, 06 August 2021.

The identification of exhumed skeletal remains was made possible through the coordination with Former Rebels (FR) who surrendered to this unit and collaboration with local government unit, Cantilan Police and tribal leaders. His family members were in great shock and saddened upon receiving the report. According to them, they have been waiting for a very long time for their family member to return home and even just to know whether their brother is still alive or dead.

It can be recalled that this unit conducted retrieval operation of unidentified skeletal remains at Sitio Avelino, Brgy Cabangahan, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, last July 28, 2021. The exhumed skeletal remains was a victim of NPA summary execution that the discovery of grave site was made possible through the help and revelation of Former Rebel (FR) who surrendered to this unit.

The sister of Manuel positively identified the remains and expressed her gratitude to the government for facilitating the recovery of her brother’s skeletal remains and to be able to give a decent burial alongside with their faded family members. Their long-waited journey for their brother to come home is now finally over as they are now preparing for their reunification with Manuel’s remains for his final destination.

The 36 Infantry (Valor) Battalion, then immediately assisted the family members to process the needed documents and directly endorse to LGU Cantilan, SDS for immediate burial assistance and for proper and decent burial of Manuel’s remains. The troops also assisted the family members to file criminal charges against the Communist-NPA-Terrorist Group who is responsible to this inhumane act to innocent civilian with no respect for human life and violate the Rule of Law, Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.

In his statement, Lt. Colonel Michael Rey S. Reuyan, Acting Battalion Commander of 36th IB, “It is very clear to every Filipino that the Communist-NPA-Terrorist has no respect for human life, they do not care what the bereaved families may have feel nor destroyed, they will just continue terrorizing the Filipino people for their on cause and to propagate their nonsense communist ideology especially to the peace loving people of Surigao del Sur.”

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the bereaved families. We will press the fight against these ruthless murderers and violators of human rights and international humanitarian law and bring justice to our innocent and peace-loving communities.” LTC Reuyan added.

“I call on to the remaining CNT’s in Surigao del Sur to stop the killings of innocent civilians and non-combatants, particularly marginalize IP communities. Abandon your futile armed struggle and resolve differences thru peaceful means. Surrender and avail the ECLIP to achieve a long-lasting peace and livelihood opportunities.” LTC Reuyan ended.
