ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is strengthening its ties with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to stop the extortion activities of the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) related to the upcoming 2022 national elections.

PRO-6 spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong said the CPP-NPA extorts money from politicians through “permit to campaign” fees in areas the rebels claim to be their strongholds.

“So far, no extortion activities have been monitored. The filing of certificates of candidacy and the campaign period have not started yet. But the PNP (Philippine National Police) and the AFP are ready to act,” Malong said.

She issued this public appeal: “The only way we could stop this extortion activities of the CPP-NPA is to report these to the PNP or the AFP.”

Extortion persists, said Malong, “because people are allowing the CPP-NPA to get their hard-earned money.”

Recently, PNP chief General Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar ordered the police to work closely with the military in preventing communist-terrorists from extorting “permit-to-campaign” fees from politicians come election season.

“I am directing all police offices and units to be extra vigilant,” Eleazar said.

He also warned politicians not to give money to the NPA as “passes” during the campaign period or they would be charged criminally.
