Top NPA leader killed in Surigao

From the Manila Times (Apr 3, 2021): Top NPA leader killed in Surigao (By Cris Diaz)

A rebel commander of the outlawed New People’s Army (NPA) was killed while another was captured in a clash with government forces in Surigao del Norte, the military reported on Thursday.

A belated military report identified the rebel only as alias “WAR,” vice commanding platoon officer of the armed propaganda unit of the GF16 of the Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee.

His fellow fighter who was slightly wounded and identified only as alias Ka Bebot was given first aid by the troops at the clash site and later evacuated to the Municipal Health Unit in Gigaquit for further medical treatment.

Lt. Benjamin Elisand de Dios, spokesman for the Philippine Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion based in Gigaquit, said the true name of the slain NPA commander was withheld pending notification of the relatives.

He added that WAR’s body was brought to a funeral home in Bacuag town for proper burial.

Recovered from the scene of the encounter were one M16 rifle, one M203 grenade launcher, fragmentation grenades, foodstuff and personal belongings.
