ZAMBOANGA CITY: More than 1,000 former members of Sulu-based Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) were recently offered by the national government, through the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), livelihood programs to help them improve their families’ living condition.
This was disclosed in a program held here early this month by MNLF Central Committee Chairman Yusop Jikiri, who reported that the former rebel combatants, led by their field commanders, earlier assembled at the MNLF main camp at coastal Barangay Pasil in Indanan town to identify particular livelihood programs offered by OPAPP Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. who had previously flown to the area through the assistance of the Western Mindanao Command.
Galvez explained to local media “the OPAPP is the government agency that handles peace talks and negotiations related to internal conflict and rebellion in the country.”
He recalled the MNLF, founded in 1972 by then-University of the Philippines professor Nur Misuari, has reconciled with President Rodrigo Duterte.
In 1996, the MNLF signed a landmark peace agreement with the Philippine government that brought about the creation of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, which close to two years ago was renamed Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
