Government forces arrested an alleged communist rebel militiaman Thursday night in the Surigao del Sur town of Lianga, a police official said.
Col. James Goforth, Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office (SDSPPO) chief, identified the suspect as Juanito Tejero Calipay, of Barangay Diatagon, Lianga, and an alleged member of the Milisya ng Bayan of the New People's Army (NPA).
Goforth said the 28-year-old Calipay was arrested near his residence during a joint operation of the police and the military.
Calipay has five standing warrants of arrest for attempted murder and frustrated murder, the police official said.
Goforth also lauded the efforts of the joint government forces that led to the arrest of the suspect.
He said Calipay is now under the custody of Lianga Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.
The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
