NORTH COTABATO, Philippines – A member of the Dawlah Islamiya or Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Pikit town on Wednesday.
The military said soldiers were checking the reported presence of armed men in Barangay Manaulanan when the clash occurred.
Katato Samad was tagged in a series of bombings of power transmission lines connecting North Cotabato to hydroelectric plants in Bukidnon and in Lanao del Sur in 2015, according to Maj. Gen. Diosdado Carreon, 6th Infantry Division commander, said.
Two of Samad’s cohorts identified only as Tato and Mursid were reportedly wounded in the clash.
Improvised explosive devices, a rifle, ammunition, .40 millimeter grenade projectiles and a motorcycle were recovered at the scene.
