The National Democratic Front-Eastern Visayas today condemned the recent extrajudicial killings of three peasants in Northern Samar and pinned these on the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division. “The new year has barely started and a peasant leader already been killed in line with the Duterte government’s ‘counterinsurgency’ campaign,” said Fr. Santiago “Ka Sanny” Salas, NDF-EV spokesperson. “Last January 17, Enit Basiloy De Andres was shot dead by riding-in-tandem assassins in Catarman. She was a peasant leader in Lope de Vega town and had joined protests in Manila over the twin calamities of pest infestations and militarization.
“Meanwhile, Barangay Chairperson Boni Cardenas of Brgy. Quezon, Catarman was shot dead last Dec. 23; her husband was also seriously wounded. Earlier on December 3, Garci Ongkelan was also killed by motorcycle-riding assassins in Brgy. Balete, San Isidro.”
The NDF-EV spokesperson warned that the continuing extrajudicial killings blight the prospects of the resumption of the peace talks between the NDFP and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines. “The Duterte administration and its 8th ID is carrying out a reign of terror in Samar. Civilians have borne the brunt of militarization resulting to extrajudicial killings, aerial and artillery bombardments, food blockades and other human rights violations. Thus, while the Duterte government talks of peace, its military and police appear to be preparing to intensify their attacks on the people and their revolutionary movement.”
Fr. Salas said Duterte and his military have already shown their extreme desperation and stupidity in recently declaring the goal of defeating the New People’s Army by 2022. “After failing to defeat the NPA in the past 50 years, the reactionary government is now saying the NPA will be kaput in three years. In reality, the anticommunist campaign of the Duterte government has been unable to defeat the NPA and now focuses on attacking the people to dissuade them from supporting the NPA. Such dictatorial means only make the people and the NPA ever closer in fighting Duterte. The Duterte government must heed the people’s mounting outrage over appalling human rights violations and other burning issues. A just and lasting peace, or suffer the juggernaut of millions ousting it.”
