A team of police and Army personnel arrested an alleged member of the Militia ng Bayan of the New People’s Army (NPA), who was caught with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday, Brig. Gen. Joselito T. Esquivel Jr., the chief of Police Regional Office-13, said personnel of Kitcharao Municipal Police Station and Army troops belonging to 29th Infantry Battalion implemented a search warrant for illegal possession of firearms and explosives against a certain Ariel Sarida Azucena.


Esquivel said Azucena was cornered inside his residence in Barangay Jaliobong, Kicharao town.

Esquivel said the suspect yielded several bomb-making materials, including sacks of ammonium sulfate, a 52-meter electrical wire, and electric blasting caps.

The confiscated items were already turned over to the custody of Kitcharao Municipal Police Station for proper disposition.

Esquivel said the serving of the warrant was part of the intensified security operation of the Philippine National Police to ensure the safety of residents during the Yuletide season.

Recently, PRO-13 said it has raised a full alert status until January 5 next year to secure the holidays.

He said a total of 7,325 PNP personnel and force multipliers are now dispatched in the whole region tasked to conduct maximum security coverage, public safety measures, contingency plans, and other support services for the Holiday season.
