BUTUAN CITY – Col. Maurito Licudine, the commander of the 402nd Brigade inspired the Reserve Officers’ Training Course (ROTC) cadets during the Joint Closing Ceremony of ROTC Trainings held recently at the 15th Regional Community Defense Group (RCDG) headquarters, Army Reserve Command (ARESCOM) in Brgy. Bancasi, this city.
A total of 304 ROTC cadet trainees coming from Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur graduated the Advance ROTC Academic Phase Training (ARAPT) and Pre-Deployment Training conducted by the 15RCDG, ARESCOM headed by its Group Commander, Col. Julian Pacatan, Jr.
Representing the 15RCDG, Maj. Annie Rose Puno, Group Adjutant, encouraged the graduating ROTC cadets to show their commitment towards fellow students in their respective schools on their social responsibility and their roles in the community.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the awarding and presentation of medals led by Col. Licudine and Col. Pacatan Jr. assisted by Lt. Col. Cabantug, the training director, to recognize the trainees who topped and excelled after enduring the rigorous and regimented training.
In his speech, Col. Licudine congratulated the 15RCDG for doing their job well in training and imbuing the ideals of soldiery to the ROTC cadets. He indicated the possibility of mandatory ROTC training to be implemented not only in Senior High Schools but to all able-bodied Filipinos as the necessity is borne out due to the distorted outlook of millennial on nationalism and patriotism. Hence, there is a need to revert back to basics and restore these traits among the youth of today to prepare them in molding our country’s future.
It can be recalled that the House Bill (HB) 8961 already passed 3rd and final reading in Congress last May 20, 2019 makes the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) two-year program mandatory for Grades 11 and 12 (male and female students) whose goal is to produced well-trained and prepared reservists for military and civic service. The ROTC training is aimed to instill patriotism, love of country, moral and spiritual virtues, and respect for human rights and adherence to the Constitution.
Col. Licudine challenged the ROTC cadets and made them understand that they have a bigger role in the near future as advocates of the ROTC Program and become exemplars and role models to those who are hesitant and unwilling, “Do not fail because you were taught the values, character and ideals of the Filipino soldier. Nurture and propagate what you were taught and become responsible citizens of our proud nation,” he said.
The official ended by sharing the quote from Benjamin Franklin, an American Polymath and embolden the cadets, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn. I duly hope that you have taken your training seriously, gained learnings that will enable you to influence others with how you were molded in terms of discipline and patriotism, and be conduits for peace and development.” (402nd Brigade, PA/PIA-Caraga)
