From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 1, 2019): Village exec survives ambush in North Cotabato

Police have launched a manhunt against two men onboard a motorbike who ambushed and wounded a village official from Cotabato City on Saturday evening in Makilala, North Cotabato.

“Investigators from the Makilala and Cotabato City police offices are closely coordinating to unmask the gunmen who tried to kill a village chair of Cotabato City at about 6 p.m. Saturday,” Col. Maximo Layugan, North Cotabato provincial police director, told reporters here Monday.

Layugan identified the target of the attack as Datu Bimbo Ayunan, chief of Barangay Mother Kalanganan in Cotabato City.

The 37-year-old village official was driving his Ford pick-up vehicle with his wife heading to Davao City when unidentified gunmen aboard a motorbike opened fire.

Ayunan sustained a gunshot wound on his stomach and is now recuperating in a hospital, police said. His wife escaped unharmed.

Police recovered empty shells for .45-caliber pistol from the site of the ambush.

Layugan said the motive for the ambush remains unknown as of this posting.
