Acting on a tip-off from three New People’s Army (NPA) surrenderers, the military recovered 22 high-powered firearms belonging to the rebels in an area bordering Davao City, Davao del Norte, and Bukidnon.

Col. Ezra Balagtey, spokesperson of Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), said the firearms recovered in the last three days -- Saturday, Sunday and Monday -- consisted of 15 M16s, three M14 rifles, two Garand rifles, and other guns of various calibers.

Lt. General Felimon T. Santos Jr., Eastmincom commander, attributed the discovery of the arms cache to the NPA surrenderers, who have been providing the military with vital information.

Santos said the increase in the number of surrenders is the result of the peace initiatives of the local government units, the support of the communities, and the benefits provided by the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) program to former rebels.

"The peace initiatives of our local government units send a goodwill message to our lost brothers that indeed, the government is still the best ally," the Eastmincom chief said.
