From the Visayan Daily Star (Dec 17): Five NPA guerilla fronts set for CPP anniversary
The five guerilla fronts of the New People’s Army on Negros Island are all set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines on December 26, Ka Juanito Magbanua, NPA Negros spokesman, said yesterday.
The celebration will highlight the gains of the revolutionary movement, that now has 110 guerilla fronts in 17 regions of the Philippines, or in 73 out of 81 provinces, he told the DAILY STAR.
The anniversary celebrations in Negros that will be joined by the masses, are expected to be attended by 2,000 to 3,000 per guerilla front, he said.
Despite the refusal of the government to declare holiday ceasefires, Magbanua said the NPA will observe a cessation of hostilities from December 24 to 26, and from December 31 to January 1.
The NPA is obliged to observe the CPP declared, he added.
“We will not initiate any offensives during our ceasefire, we will be on a defensive mode,” he said.
However, if government forces enter their guerrilla front areas they will be obliged to respond, he added.
After the ceasefire, the NPA will resume its tactical offensives against government forces when opportunities arise, such as the staging of ambushes, raids and liquidation activities, he said.
