Madrigal contender as next AFP chief

From the Mindanao Times (Nov 14): Madrigal contender as next AFP chief

Lt. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr., chief of Davao-based Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom), is one of the contenders to become the next chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Madrigal is the former brigade commander of the 7001st Infantry Brigade and former commander of the 4th Infantry Division based in Cagayan de Oro City.

Prior to his assumption as chief of EastMinCom, he is the former commander of the South Luzon Command (SolCom).

AFP Chief of staff Gen. Carlito Galvez is set to retire by Dec. 12 as he reaches the mandatory military retirement age of 56.

Galvez, who held a farewell visit and command conference at the Naval Felix Apolinario Station in Panacan yesterday, said the next AFP chief is the choice of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“It is still the prerogative of the President and (Madrigal) is one of the contenders,” Galvez told reporters in an interview.

Galvez, the 50th AFP chief of staff, and Madrigal both belong to Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Sandiwa” Class of 1985.
