From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 3): Butuan cops repulse NPA attack

A police station based in a far-flung barangay here repulsed a past midnight attack on Friday by an undetermined number of armed group, believed to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.

Senior Insp. Renelle Serrano, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office here, said the attackers harassed the Butuan City Police Station 5, based in San Mateo, this city at around 1:50 a.m,

Serrano said the police station had been alerted of the attack and was prepared for it. He said the armed group positioned themselves near the banks of Subait River, approximately 50 meters away from the police station.

Serrano said the attackers fired first but withdrew to the northern direction when the policemen defending their station returned fire.

There was no casualty reported on the side of the policemen during the ten-minute firefight.

Police said they had been tipped off of the attack by their intelligence counterpart at the Army’s 23rd Infantry Battalion.

Police and military forces are on hot pursuit against the rebels as of this posting.
