From the Mindanao Examiner (May 16): Wanted Sayyaf militant arrested in Zamboanga City
Government soldiers arrested a young Abu Sayyaf militant wanted by authorities for murders in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said Tuesday.
Police said the 18-year old Sahid Mohammad Alip was nabbed at a military checkpoint in Muti village. He was carrying a .45-caliber pistol when soldiers stopped him for security inspection before midnight Sunday.
His arrest was only announced on Tuesday because of continued operation to track down other militants in Zamboanga. During interrogation, Alip admitted being a member of the ISIS-affiliate Abu Sayyaf group and is a follower of sub-leader Jamiul Nasalun.
Alip also confessed that he and other militants were behind the February strafing of a provincial bus in Zamboanga City that injured at least 8 passengers, and the shooting of a civilian Ronald Juela in Zamboanga in November last year.
Superintendent Rogelio Alabata, the regional police spokesman, said Alip is wanted by the police for his involvement in many crimes and has a string of arrest warrants issued by a local court.
“The suspect is temporarily detained pending the filing of appropriate charges in court,” he said.
It was not immediately known whether Alip’s group was planning to launch terror attacks in Zamboanga.
