1 Abu Sayyaf member dead, 2 others surrender in Sulu, Basilan- AFP

From ABS-CBN (May 20): 1 Abu Sayyaf member dead, 2 others surrender in Sulu, Basilan- AFP

An Abu Sayyaf member was killed while two others surrendered in separate operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM) said this week, the military said Saturday.

In a statement, the military said an ASG member identified as “Imbo" was killed on Friday in a clash with the military in Bangalaw Island, Banguingui, Sulu. He was known to have been a trusted contact of ASG subleader Alhabsy Misaya, who was killed last month in the same province.

The AFP recovered from “Imbo,” an M16 rifle, ammunition, a sachet of shabu and five other empty ones, along with a cellphone with “pertinent information [on] his fellow bandits.”

Two bandits meanwhile surrendered on Thursday in Lamitan City, Basilan.

They were identified as Janatin Mudjaral Madjakin, 44, and his son Aldasid Madjakin, 19.

In his report to the WESMINCOM, Joint Task Force Basilan chief Col. Juvymax Uy said the two surrendered due to “difficulties" they encountered amid "the relentless military operations.”

WESMINCOM Chief Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr. called on ASG members to lay down their arms for a “peaceful and progressive Mindanao.”

"More than anything else, we also want to work for peace without the use of arms and prevent bloodshed,” Galvez said.

"But if they prefer to fight, then we will make sure that our troops will get them hard the soonest."

According to the military, 27 ASG members have surrendered as of this writing.

Last March, it was reported that 32 ASG members have been killed this year.
