From the Mindanao Examiner (Oct 1): Troops recover weapons in Basilan

Army soldiers have recovered two automatic rifles and ammunition including rifle grenades following a clash with an unidentified man in Basilan, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region, officials said Saturday.

Officials said the man managed to escaped and left behind the weapons in Katipunan village in Tuburan town. Soldiers recovered one M14 and an M16 rifles and dozens of ammunition, four rifle grenades, a binocular and a pair of combat boots and a hammock.

It was not immediately known whether the man is a member of the Abu Sayyaf or private army.

The military’s Western Mindanao Command said troops were patrolling the village when they spotted the man carrying the weapons. The man opened fire on the soldiers and sparking a firefight. The military said no was killed or wounded in the fighting.
