A Pakistani national wanted for several crimes in his
country was arrested in Subic , Zambales in a
joint law enforcement operation headed by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) over
the weekend.
Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the foreigner as Malik
Muhammad Sharif, alias Sharif Ahmad, who was apprehended by agents of the BI
and other law enforcement and security agencies at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
The 39-year old foreign national, who was born in Sialkot , Pakistan ,
is wanted in Islamabad
for double murder, attempted murder, terrorism and rioting.
According to the Interpol Red Notice, the subject carries a
sentence of death penalty in Pakistan .
The operation was part of the bureau’s Target Hardening
efforts.
During his assumption speech last Friday, Morente declared
that one of the primary areas that the Bureau will focus on is tighter border
control, especially with the escalating levels of terrorist activities
happening across the globe.
“It is imperative for the Bureau to secure Philippine borders
by shoring up border control, especially our anti-terrorism and anti-crime
efforts, to guard against the entry of foreign terrorists or criminal elements
who may want to hide in the country to escape prosecution in their home
country, or who might try to engage in lawless activities,” he said.
“We will make sure that these foreigners will not be able to
make our country their safe haven,” Morente added.
At the same time, the BI Chief commended the members of the
bureau’s Fugitive Search Unit which worked jointly with other police and
military units for the successful manhunt operation.
“This is just the start. More arrests will be done in the
coming days and weeks, targeting not only fugitives from justice but also
foreigners who are abusing their stay in the country by continuing to engage in
unlawful activities or who continue to violate our Immigration laws,” Morente
said.
