Palace exec discounts spillover of fight between gov't, ASG to Metro Manila

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 15): Palace exec discounts spillover of fight between gov't, ASG to Metro Manila

A Palace official on Friday discounted any spillover to Metro Manila of the on-going fight between government troopers and the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), stressing the security forces’ readiness and alertness against any threats.

In a briefing, President Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said what they consider is the over-all situation wherein bandits are always on the lookout for opportunities to sow fear and terror.

On the part of the government it is doing and will do what is right to stop them (bad elements) and prevent them from sowing fear),” he said.

Coloma said the police and security forces are always on the state of “watchfulness to ensure the safety and security of the public at all times.”

He, however, urged the public to also do their part in this endeavor as cooperation between the government and the citizenry has proven its effectiveness, citing what happened during last year’s Papal visit and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

”As they carry on with their usual community and family activities, we urge the public to maintain vigilance and cooperate with the authorities in observing precautionary measures,” he said.

Coloma also stressed that President Benigno Aquino III is firm on eradicating terrorist groups such as the ASG.

”Buong-buo ang determinasyon ng Pangulo at ng pamahalaan na bigyan na ng mariing dagok at mawakasan na itong mga pananakot na ginagawa ng mga grupo (grupong ito) (The President is fully determined to damage and end the terrorist activities of this group),” he said.

The Palace official also cited that modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philipines’ (AFP) has increased the armed forces’ capacity to fight terrorist groups.

”Sapat ang kagamitan ng ating mga Sandatahang Lakas. Sapat din ang kanilang pagsasanay. Mataas ang moral ng ating mga kasundaluhan kaya’t pinaiigting ‘yung paglaban sa kanila (Our armed forces have enough equipment. They are also properly trained. The morale of our soldiers are also high and this is he reason for the strengthened actions against them (the terrorist),” he added.
