MARAWI CITY – Security forces shot dead a suspected kidnapper and arrested 3 others who were all wounded in a clash in Marawi City in Lanao del Sur province in the restive Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines.
Policemen, backed by army soldiers, traded gunfire with the gang after they released a seven-year old Chinese boy and his 15-year old nanny late Friday. The duo was kidnapped February 12 in Cagayan de Oro City and had been freed after the boy’s family paid P500,000 ransoms.
Security forces pursued the gunmen as they were escaping and caught up with them in Marawi and a firefight ensued killing Jun Nasher Barao, 35, of Lanao del Sur’s Madalum town. One policeman from Cagayan de Oro City who joined the pursuit was also wounded in the fighting.
The ransom money was also recovered by security forces. Among the units involved in the operation were the Police Regional Intelligence Division, Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, Police Special Action Force, 103rd Special Action Company and 1st Special Action Battalion of the Philippine Army, and the Anti-Kidnapping Group.
