5 NPA rebels surrender

From the Mindanao Times (Jan 8): 5 NPA rebels surrender

FIVE NPA members surrendered to different units under 10th Infantry Division over the weekend.

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, spokesperson of 10th ID, identified them by their aliases as Vanvan, 21, and Dahon, 20, both members of Guerilla Front 71 of the Far South Mindanao Region, who brought along two high-powered firearms, an AK-47 and a M16 rifle.

Batchar said Alias Vanvan and Dahon surrendered to the 73rd Infantry Battalion when they were ambushed by their own comrades after they failed to deliver supplies to a group of NPAs, under alias Yoyong.

Meanwhile, a married couple identified as alias Ryan, 20, and his wife, alias Ariane, 22, both members of Guerilla Front 73, and alias Jay, 17, member of Guerilla Front 34 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, also  surrendered to soldiers.

In his statement, Maj.Gen Rafael Valencia expects that communist rebels should realize that 47 years of armed struggle has only brought misery to the Filipino families.

“Many Filipino lives were wasted, as parents and children alike were victimized by the brutality of the armed struggle carried out by the CPP-NPA,” Valencia said.

The former NPAs will be enrolled in the Comprehensive Local Integration Program of the government.
