Military seizes IEDs, bomb components in Butuan City

From the Manila Bulletin (Dec 4): Military seizes IEDs, bomb components in Butuan City

Butuan CityThe Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) seized several bomb-making materials, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), at Dugyaman area, Barangay Anticala, some 17 kilometers northeast of Butuan City, a regional Army spokesman yesterday said.

Aside from the bomb components and nine IEDs, government troops also seized an AK47 rifle, an AR18 rifle, foodstuffs, 10 back packs believed to be owned by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and several subversive documents with high intelligence value.

These were reportedly left behind by fleeing NPAs, who earlier figured in a 30-minute gun battle with elements of 29th Infantry Battalion (29th IB) at nearby highland Tagkiling area of that same barangay of Anticala early Thursday morning.

The Tagkiling encounter left an NPA rebel dead. His identity is not still known, said Capt. Joe Patrick A. Martinez, spokesman of Northeastern and Northern Mindanao 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division (4th ID).

“The body of the NPA rebel was immediately turned over to the officials of Barangay Anticala for identification and a decent burial,” he said.

The presence of the NPA group at the highland areas of Barangay Anticala was tipped-off by concerned villagers who were forced to attend the insurgents’ lectures on ‘Batakang Kursong Pang Masa’ (NPA Basic Mass Course) and extortion activities, claimed the 4th ID spokesman, quoting the report of Lt. Col. Adonis Ariel G. Orio, commanding officer of the 29th IB.

Troops of the 29th IB immediately responded to address the residents’ complaint.

“Unmindful of the civilians nearby, NPAs belonging to guerilla-Front Committee 21-C of the CPP-NPA Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NMRC) indiscriminately fired but the troops managed to maneuver to a vantage position, keeping the civilians away from danger, Martinez said.
