From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 13): Lawless armed group tried, but failed, to overrun Army base in Maguindanao

Outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) tried but failed to overrun an Army base in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao on Friday morning, the military here said.

Colonel Edgar Delos Reyes, commander of the 34th Infantry Battalion based in Shariff Aguak, said about 30 heavily armed BIFF simultaneously attack the 34th IB detachment using assault rifles and shoulder fired grenades at past 4 a.m.

Alert soldiers returned fire triggering a two-hour sporadic fire fight until the gunmen fled to the hinterlands of Shariff Aguak.

The skirmishes triggered mass evacuation of about 30 families but have already returned home Friday afternoon.

Delos Reyes said the gunmen were led by a certain Commander Abu Bin Laden. He could not say whether the attackers sustained fatalities or not.

No casualty on the government side.
