ONE soldier was killed and another wounded when they were attacked by rebels after they responded to a distress call from school authorities in Barangay Palma Gil, Talaingod, Davao del Norte on Monday afternoon.
 
According to the report, student of Nasilaban Elementary School saw armed men early that morning. They told their teachers who, in turn, asked for the help of the authorities. School administrators also suspended the classes.
 
Responding soldiers conducted clearing operation were able to evacuate the school.
 
At around noontime, soldiers declared the school safe and told the teachers they could resume classes.
 
They were on their way back to headquarters around 1:30 p.m. when they were attacked.
 
“Our soldiers are there to protect the local communities, but even this is being used by the NPAs to sow terror and disrupt our peace and development efforts,” said Lt. Col. Vincent Edgardo de Ocampo, commander of 68th Infantry Battalion.
 
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Rafael Valencia, newly assumed commander of the 10th Infantry Division, honored the sacrifice of the fallen soldier.
 
“Our commitment to peace to work together to achieved it,” Valencia said.
