Ranking American naval officer joins P-8A surveillance mission

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 19): Ranking American naval officer joins P-8A surveillance mission

Pacific Fleet commander, Admiral Scott Swift, who is in a four-day visit to the counry, participated in a P-8A "Poseidon" aircraft surveillance mission over the West Philippine Sea Saturday.

The flight was hosted by the VP-45 "Pelicans" of the US Navy.

Swift arrived in the Philippine last July 16 for a four-day meeting with the country's senior military leaders.

"As part of his visit to the Philippines this week, Adm. Scott Swift, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet . . . took part in a seven-hour maritime surveillance mission to witness firsthand the full range of the Poseidon's capabilities," read the caption of the photos taken by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Tyler R. Fraser of the US Navy.

On Friday, he was accorded full military honors at the AFP General Headquarters (GHQ) in Camp Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, where he also made customary office call on newly-installed AFP chief-of-staff, Lt. Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri.

For almost half an hour the two military leaders engaged in friendly banter and had frank exchanges on various security topics.

Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato, chief, AFP public affairs office chief, said Swift told Iriberri he intentionally made the Philippines his first stop to reiterate the importance of Philippines-US alliance.

He said both leaders also shared that a move for more multilateral military activities would be a positive step and should be explored further to contribute in ensuring greater stability and security in the region.

Swift earlier made a statement reassuring allies that American forces are ready to respond to any contingency in the South China Sea.
