AFP cites success of ‘Bayanihan’ in neutralizing 600 rebels

From the Manila Bulletin (Jul 3): AFP cites success of ‘Bayanihan’ in neutralizing 600 rebels

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Friday cited the continued success of the government’s Internal Peace and Security Plan (IPSP) “Bayanihan”, which has resulted in the neutralization of at least 600 members of the New People’s Army (NPA), Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) during the past six months.

This was the assessment made in AFP command conference presided over by outgoing Chief of Staff, Gen. Gregorio Pio P. Catapang, Jr.

Giving statistics, AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said that at least 340 rebels have been killed or arrested since January this year, bringing the number of communist guerrillas to less then 3,000. Around 166 firearms were also recovered in various operations around the country.

Cabunoc said among the high-level accomplishments of the military was the killing early this week of Leoncio Pitao alias Commander Parago, the head of the NPA’s Pulang Bagani Command, which operates in Compostela Valley and Davao regions.

A total of 330 cases against the NPA have also been filed in court, while 212 warrants of arrest were already released.

Cabunoc further said that at least 58 provinces have been declared as “peaceful and ready for development” because the threats and influence of rebels in these areas is already manageable, which prompted local police to already takeover of the security operations.

10 more provinces have been declared as completely out of the influence of the guerillas.
