Reports reaching Manila indicated that at least four powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) were neutralized on Saturday morning by soldiers and policemen in Sitio Motilla, Barangay Lun Padidu, Malapatan, Sarangani.

Captain Rey Balibagoso, Spokesman of the 73rd Infantry Battalion, reported that the bombs were completely neutralized at around 5:30 a.m. after security forces responded to tips from civilians about suspicious-looking objects, which could be landmines, that they found in their place.

Based on the description provided by 1st Lt. B-Jay Ursua, the four landmines measured around 6.5 inches in diameter and 9.5 inches tall, and were armed with detonating devices.

"We would like to thank the civilians in the area for providing us with the timely information. The IEDs recovered are believed to be from the NPA units based in Tuluna, North Cotabato.

"This clearly showed that they are desperate in their effort to terrorize the people and sabotage the peace and order situation in the area. These materials are definitely anti-people and violate provisions of International Humanitarian Law and Republic Act 9851.

"We will do whatever it takes to get these banned weapons to preserve life," said Col. Ronald Villanueva, commander of the 1002nd Infantry Brigade.
