2 hurt as rebels attack police outpost

From the Philippine Star (Jun 15): 2 hurt as rebels attack police outpost

ILOILO CITY, Philippines  – A police officer and a civilian were wounded when suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas opened fire at a police detachment in Dumarao, Capiz over the weekend.

Police Officer 3 Jomer Ombega of the public safety company was hit in the thigh and was taken to a hospital for treatment along with the civilian, whose name was not immediately available.

Reports said that at least 30 rebels positioned themselves on a hill and fired at the police detachment in Barangay Bungsoan.

The police officers were able to return fire, forcing the rebels to flee.

Police recovered bullet shells for different rifles at the scene.

Capiz police director Senior Superintendent Robert Rodriguez believes that the attack was meant to harass the officers and not to seize the outpost.
