Rido fear prompts 1,083 to flee homes in Basilan — NDRRMC

From GMA News (Aug 3): Rido fear prompts 1,083 to flee homes in Basilan — NDRRMC

Fear of a firefight caused by a rido (family feud) prompted more than 1,000 residents to flee their homes in Basilan, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said late Saturday.

In a report posted on its website early Sunday, the NDRRMC said the residents were from Barangay Languyan in Hadji Mohammad Ajul in Basilan.

Some 261 families or 1,083 people sought refuge with relatives in Barangay Tuburan Proper and Basakan for fear of a rido at 11 p.m. last Thursday, July 31.

While the families returned to continue their livelihood the next day, they fled anew Friday evening "for fear that at any time the rival families will engage in a firefight."

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the NDRRMC said there had been no casualties or damage, while the affected families had not received any relief assistance.

The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is coordinating with the local disaster management councils in Basilan on the possible rido.

For their part, the police and military are on heightened alert for the possible eruption of violence.
