Motorcycle gunmen ambushed three family members on another motorcycle and killing the 51-year patriarch in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines, police said Monday.

Police Rolando Vics, a former government militia, was killed in the attack and his wife, Leticia, 49, had been shot and wounded in the arm. Their son, Marlon, was unscathed from the weekend attack which occurred near a bridge at Sitio Alegre in Lower Landing village in Dumingag town.

The gunmen fled after the shooting. Police said it is investigating the motive of the attack or if communist rebels were involved in the ambush. The province is a known stronghold of the New People’s Army rebels fighting for a separate state in the country.
