Philippine rebels ambush soldiers

From the Manila Examiner BlogSpot site (May 6): Philippine rebels ambush soldiers

Communist insurgents ambushed a military truck and wounded one soldier in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay, police said on Tuesday.

Police said truck, driven by Private First Class Roberto Dua, was travelling in the town of Kabasalan on their way to the military base when some 15 New People’s Army rebels ambushed the soldiers near the village of Palinta. It said Staff Sergeant Rodel Roda, a member of the 44th Infantry Battalion, sustained two gunshot wounds in the left leg.

The attack sparked a firefight between troops and rebels.

Police said about 100 bullet casings fired from an Ak-47 and M16 automatic rifles were recovered from the area after the clashes, including an improvised explosive left behind by the NPA, which is fighting for a separate communist state in the country.

There was no immediate statement from the military about the ambush.
