The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) remembers the gallantry and sacrifices of the Filipino veterans as it joins the week-long commemoration of the Araw ng Kagitingan and the Philippine Veterans Week, which formally started Saturday morning.
Army commander Lt. Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri led the Sunrise Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers (TUKS), Libingan ng mga Bayani at about 6 a.m., signaling the commencement of the Philippine Veterans Week.
Senior military officers, other members of the military, Philippine National Police, World War II Veteran and Post War Veteran Leaders, members of the sons and daughters of the VFP, representatives from the youth sectors, Boy Scout and Girl Scout of the Philippines, representatives from the different government agencies and non-government organizations were present during the activity.
A wreath laying ceremony was also conducted at the TUKS with Defense undersecretary Honorio S. Acuesta leading the ceremony representing Defense Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin.
Meanwhile, a brigade-size parading contingent, composed of personnel from the Army, Navy (Fleet and Marines) and Air Force, tendered a testimonial review in honor of the veterans at the Hunters ROTC Guerilla Parade Ground.
The veterans and their widows, guests and visitors gathered at the Headquarters Philippine Army Grandstand for the review.
Vice President Jejomar Binay graced the event with chief-of-staff Gen. Emmanuel T. Bautista.
Bautista warmly welcomed the participants. Outstanding Filipino veterans during the World War II were also recognized and conferred with awards.
