Army soldiers, pursuing fleeing New People's Army rebels they had encountered on March 8, figured in another armed clash Tuesday with the lawless group in Brgy. Santo Nino, Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.

Maj. Rey Tiongson, 3 rd Infantry Division spokesman, yesterday said the running gunbattle ensued after 79th Infantry Battalion soldiers were fired at by a group of NPA rebels, that led to about five minutes of running gunbattle.

Tiongson said pursuing 79 th IB troopers recovered a KG-9 sub machaine gun with a magazine containing ammunition and personal belongings at the encounter site. No casualty was reported on the government side.

On March 8, 79 th IB soldiers had figured in an encounter with about 15 suspected rebels in Brgy. Bahi-an, Tanjay City. The fleeing rebels left an M16 assault rifle and subversive documents at the encounter site.

Citing information they got from civilians, Tiongson said the fleeing rebels may have incurred casualties, as indicated by the recovery of two firearms, and traces of bloodstains along their withdrawal routes.

Lt. Col. Harold Anthony Pascua,79 th IB commander, issued a statement, thanking the residents of Tanjay City, for the information relayed to them about the presence of armed rebels, in their communities.
