From the Manila Bulletin (Nov 3): Dev’t initiatives
The military claimed that the atrocities perpetrated by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Southern Mindanao are hampering peace and development initiatives in the region.
Capt. Willliam Rodriguez, spokesman of 1002nd Army Brigade, said the continued attacks perpetrated by NPA rebels against government troops using landmines hindered the implementation of peace and development programs.
He cited the recent NPA atrocities in North Cotabato where nine soldiers have been killed after they were ambushed by NPA rebels with the use of command-detonated landmines.
He also accused the NPA rebels of resorting to robbery whey they carted the payroll for some 700 militiamen amounting to P2 million before they fled.
Since 2010, at least 130 people, including civilians and government troops, have been killed in NPA-led atrocities using landmines in the Southeast Mindanao region, Rodriguez said.
