The military has killed four rebels and recovered 15 assorted firearms, including one improvised explosive device, in six separate encounters with the communist rebels in Northern Mindanao in September alone,

Capt. Christian Uy of the Army’s Public Affairs Office, said the intensified anti-insurgency operations also resulted in the surrender of eight New People’s Army (NPA) rebels who also turned over a total of 11 assorted firearms comprising Armalite rifles, carbines, and AK-47 assault rifles.

Uy said that the encounters with the NPA rebels took place in Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Bukidnon province from Sept. 10 to Sept. 22, 2013.

He said that the military has issued details of the encounters with the communist rebels in Northern Mindanao to inform the public of the rebel’s employment of atrocities and terror in the region.

The military engaged the NPA rebels during routine patrols and in response to reports of alleged NPA harassments among innocent civilians in areas where the armed skirmishes took place, Uy added.

Uy said the NPAs' attacked on an army patrol base in the farming village of Lantad, Kibanban in Misamis Oriental last Sunday morning where an Army sergeant and four other militiamen were killed.

The four killed militiamen in the Lantad firefight will each receive P90,000 financial assistance from the military, he said.

The communist rebels were employing harassments and indiscriminate attacks on civilian populated areas in their desperate attempt to regain lost ground in Northern Mindanao, Uy added.

He said that the NPA rebels would not succeed anymore since the civilians who were before deceived into believing a utopian ideology has lost faith in the communist doctrine of terror.
