From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 15): 2 rebels, 5 firearms captured in Negros Occidental

Troopers from the 62nd Infantry Battalion and the 33rd Division Reconnaissance Company have successfully captured two New People's Army (NPA) fighters and five firearms during a series of encounters in Sagay City, Negros Occidental Saturday morning.

Major Ray Tiongson, 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson, said the encounters transpired at Sitio Magtuod, Barangays Bug-ang, Toboso and Sitio Dalia, Barangay Puey, Sagay City.

He added their men were conducting peace and security patrol around 4:45 a.m. to check on the reported presence of armed elements in the said barangays when they were fired upon by more or less 17 NPA members.

The troops resorted to fire back and a firefight ensued for ten minutes. The NPA withdrew to west and southwest directions.

While in pursuit of the fleeing rebels, the troops encountered again the lawless elements at 7:15 a.m.

This triggered a 10-minute firefight after which the rebels quickly retreated towards Sitio Vergara and Sitio Magtuod, all of Barangay Bug-ang, Toboso, Negros Occidental leaving behind their two comrades.

The series of encounters resulted to the capture of two NPA members namely: Rene Villarin and Richard Gallego at Sitio Magtuod, Barangay Bug-ang, Toboso, Negros Occidental and the recovery of three M-16 rifles, two .45 caliber pistols, one rifle grenade, eight rounds for AK- 47 automatic rifle, two back packs which contain subversive documents of high intelligence value and personal belongings.

Tiongson added that pursuit troops saw at least three wounded NPA members were wounded on the run.

Meanwhile, Brig. Gen. Aurelio Baladad, 3rd Infantry Division commander commended his men for their professionalism and observance to human rights and rule of law.

“We acknowledge the effort of the peace loving community of Toboso and Sagay for the timely reporting of presence of the lawless elements who are threatening the civilians in the area." Baladad said.

“We can win the peace here in the region without even shedding blood and we will continue to work with other stakeholders who are helping us in this endeavor. By helping each other in the spirit of Bayanihan, we can do a lot in resolving our problems without fighting," he concluded.
