5 more rebels give up armed struggle - AFP

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 17): 5 more rebels give up armed struggle - AFP

Five members of the New People’s Army (NPA), including a couple, voluntarily surrendered to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) last week despite recent pronouncement by the National Democratic Front (NDF) to continue its armed struggle against the government,

Belated report reaching the AFP Monday said that Lemuel Moreno alias "Eying" and his wife Nida alias "Mina" surrendered to the military last Thursday in Northern Samar.

"Eying" surrendered weaponless to troopers of the 20th Infantry Battalion led by 2nd Lt. Michael M. Eria while conducting public information patrol at Barangay Santander in Bobon, Northern Samar.

Following her husband’s move, "Mina" also surrendered to Eria's men along with a .45 caliber pistol.

The two are now undergoing custodial debriefing.

In Quezon, Aileen "Karen" Tagacay and KC Jay "Dan" Villaflores surrendered to elements of the 85th Infantry Battalion last June 15.

The AFP Southern Luzon Command reported that the two are now undergoing custodial debriefing.

On the other hand, a certain Worlan Entera Salim also known as "James" surrendered himself without firearms to the 25th Infantry Battalion at Camp Kalaw, Poblacion, Monakayo in Compostella Valley Province last June 14.

He was accompanied by his father Abonjo Entera. He is currently undergoing interview with the troops at the 25th Infantry Battalion headquarters.

In Surigao Del Norte, a certain Aljun Macuray Tagunsod alias "Maxi" surrendered with firearms to Lt. Col. Vicente B. Irigan, the Commander of 30th Infantry Battalion, 2nd Special Civilian Armed Auxilliary (SCAA) Company under 23rd Infantry Battalion in Sitio Kinalablaban, Barangay Cadianao.

Firearms recovered from him were one M-16A1 rifle and one caliber .30 Garand rifle.

He was brought to the 30th IB Headquarters in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Placer for custodial debriefing and proper disposition.

In a recent report by the AFP, 77 NPAs already returned to the government’s fold during the first quarter of this year.

In 2012, the AFP recorded a total of 367 rebel returnees, and 235 for 2011.

"The AFP for its part continues to encourage our brothers and sisters who have gone the wrong path to return to the government fold and give peace a chance and totally abandon the armed struggle. In this way, more innocent civilians will be spared from their unlawful activities which hamper our government’s ongoing efforts towards progress and development for our nation," AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said.
