From the Mindanao Examiner (Apr 28): Gunmen
shoot army intell agents in Southern Philippines
Unidentified gunmen killed an army intelligence specialist and wounded his
companion in an attack Sunday in the restive province of Basilan in southern
Philippines, officials said.
Officials said the two soldiers – who belong
to the 32nd Infantry Battalion - were shot in the village called Ubit in Lamitan
City. The wounded soldier remains in critical condition.
“The attack
killed one of our soldiers,” said Brig. Gen. Daniel Lucero, commander of the 1st
Infantry Division.
The military did not release the names of the
victims, saying their families have not been informed about the attack.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the
Abu Sayyaf is actively operating in Basilan, one of five provinces under the
Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao.
