KAPALONG, Davao del Norte – A 17-year-old member of the New People’s Army (NPA) returned to the folds of the law Friday afternoon in Barangay Gupitan here.
Lt. Col. Llewellyn Binasoy, commander of the 60th Infantry Battalion, said the surrenderee, whose name was withheld being a minor, was a member of the NPA’s Guerilla Front 34 operating in the hinterlands of Davao del Norte and neighboring provinces.
Binasoy said the girl told them that she could no longer endure the hardships as they were always on the run following the series of tactical operations mounted by government troops.
He said her surrender was made possible through the help of Amy Mier, her former employer prior to her recruitment in the movement, who coordinated with the 60th IB.
She said she joined the NPA in December last year and left the group March 25 this year.
Binasoy later endorsed the girl to Arlene Semblante, head of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development in Davao del Norte, who took the youngster to Carmen District Hospital (CDH) for medical checkup and stress debriefing.
