City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. welcomed yesterday the scrapping of plans by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) to convert the Subic Bay International Airport (SBIA) into a recreational theme park, saying it is good news for private and public sectors who opposed it.... He said he favors the use of the airport as a forward base for the joint operations of the Philippine Air Force and the US Air Force as recommended by officials of the Department of National Defense (DND) to maintain regional security and stability and diffuse tension in the West Philippine Sea. “The DND’s plan is a much better alternative than closing down the SBIA as it would bolster security in the Asia-Pacific region and a big boost to the local economy. It would also neutralize China’s bullying tactics especially in the disputed Panatag shoal off the coast of Zambales,” Gordon said....
